Reigning champs Algeria stunned by 1-0 loss to Equatorial Guinea

Reigning champions Algeria are in danger of an early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations after a shock 1-0 defeat at the hands of outsiders Equatorial Guinea in Douala on Sunday. Esteban Obiang's 70th-minute goal gave Equatorial Guinea the victory and brought Algeria's 35-game unbeaten record crashing to an end.

At least 42 people, including 25 soldiers, have reportedly died as large-scale wildfires broke out in Tizi Ouzou province, east of the country’s capital, Algiers, as seen on Tuesday. The fires engulfed both forests and residential areas, while firefighters were battling the blazes with water cannons. Some local volunteers assisted them in tackling the fire.

The Pharaohs of Egypt claimed the enormous scalp of the Ivory Coast as they won their last 16 clash on spot kicks 5-4 in Douala on Wednesday evening. Eric Bailly missed the crucial spot kick for the Elephants while star man, Mohamed Salah converted to send his team through. The second game was almost a carbon-copy with no goals scored over 120 minutes between Mali and Equatorial Guinea. But it was the Northern Thunder who won 6-5 on penalties after Mali's, Falaye Sacko had his effort saved.

Egypt came back from a Sofiane Boufal penalty to claim a 2-1 victory over Morocco in their quarter final match on Sunday. Mohamed Salah equalised for the Pharao's before setting up Trézéguet in extra time to knock out the Atlas Lions. In the other game, Senegal's Sadio Mané returned to set up Famara Diedhiou for their opener only for Equatorial Guinea to respond through Jannick Buyla. But Cheikhou Kouyaté & Ismaïla Sarr made sure of the 3-1 win for the Lions of Teranga.

60 years ago today the Evian accords were signed that ended the Algerian War of Indpendence. For eight years, French colonial forces and Algerian independence fighters had been locked in a bloody war, but in March 1962, the guns fell silent and 130 years of colonial occupation came to an end. Tonight we are discussing what this means today, where Algeria is going, and the shadow still cast by Algeria's colonial past.

The signing of the Évian Accords on March 18, 1962 paved the way for Algerian independence in July of that year. But the agreements included a clause that allowed France to continue carrying out nuclear tests in the Algerian desert, causing vast radioactive contamination of land and air. Sixty years later, the victims have not been properly compensated and the extent of the damage not properly assessed. FRANCE 24's Karim Yahiaoui and Jennie Shin report.
