World champion Magnus Carlsen has called cheating "an existential threat to the game," in comments following his withdrawal from one competition and sudden resignation in another when playing an American teenager.

The goal of the club is to provide a space to play and learn the game for the young inhabitants of the slum, many of whom are not in school and work to support their families. Some of the most impressive players may even have the chance to win sponsorship to get back into education.

Nigerian lawyer Tunde Onakoya started the "Chess in Slum Africa" foundation in the Lagos neighbourhood where he grew up to teach children that they can deploy the same strategies they use on the board to achieve their full potential in life.

Tunde Onakoya, a former Nigerian chess champion, is teaching children from one of the poorest communities in Lagos how to play the game. It's a way of broadening their horizons and allowing the best players to access scholarships. Every weekend they work on improving their performance, thanks to Onakoya, who himself grew up in a slum. Nodirbek Abdusattorov, 17, dethroned Magnus Carlsen as World Rapid Chess Champion in Warsaw on Tuesday by beating Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tiebreaker. Abdusattorov won the title along with a prize of $60,000 (€53,0444). Abdusattorov only lost one match, against the Ukrainian Anton Korobov, and tied in five others.
