Chess, Charity and Community: The Story of Tunde Onakoya

Tunde Onakoya, a chess mastermind and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, has just wrapped up a truly inspiring challenge! He attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon without a loss, aiming to surpass the existing mark of 56 hours and 9 minutes. As at 04:30 am Saturday 20th morning, the Jorney that began on the 17th of April has now come to an end. As of this report, on Saturday, April 20th, there hasn’t been any official confirmation from the Guinness World Records social media pages about Tunde’s attempt.

This wasn’t just about personal glory for Tunde. Driven by a passion for education, he played for a cause – to raise $1 million for children’s education across Africa through his initiative, Chess in Slums Africa. Following Guinness World Record guidelines, Tunde faced a worthy opponent in American chess champion Shawn Martinez, ensuring continuous play throughout the marathon.

The clock ticked Hours turned into days. Physical and mental exhaustion threaten to derail his mission. Yet, fueled by his passion for the game and the cause he represents, Tunde prevailed.

With remarkable resilience, Tunde Onakoya emerged triumphant after an impressive 60 hours! He completed this feat at 04;30am this morning Saturday 20th of April,2024. Not only did he surpass the world record he also inspired a generation with his dedication and unwavering spirit.
