UN Human Rights Council puts violators in guardian role

Autocracies are using their majority on the UN Human Rights Council to shield each other from oversight. China, for example, has tapped old allies and new economic partners to evade criticism for documented abuses.

Britney Spears' lawyer says he is moving "aggressively and expeditiously" to remove the star's father from the controversial guardianship controlling her affairs. He made the comments after a very brief Los Angeles court hearing held to discuss security costs for the singer's professional conservator, who says she has received threats over the globally followed case. The lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, was appointed last week after a judge allowed the singer to choose her own representation.

The World Bank is backing Nigeria’s quest to get rid of fuel subsidy. The Country Director of the World Bank Shubham Chaudhuri, who led his team on a courtesy visit to The Guardian Group on Tuesday, November 30, explained why fuel subsidy is not sustainable. Chaudhuri, nevertheless, advised the Nigerian government to build consensus before its scheduled removal of the controversial subsidy policy.
