Ukrainian presidential official Ihor Zhovka told DW that Russia is using balloons to exhaust Ukraine's air defenses. He also reiterated calls for fighter jets from the West, and said retaking Crimea is necessary.

Kyiv is already preparing runways for the western planes, which could prove decisive in the war against Russia. On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Poland will push for a decision to deliver F-16s.

Since the start of the war, tens of thousands of Muslims have either picked up arms or assisted in the war efforts in other ways. While most of these Muslims are of course Ukrainian, many are from Caucasus, and Chechnya in particular.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana told DW that the alliance is determined to continue supporting Ukraine for as long as it takes.

Ukraine's president said there is "no alternative" to victory. Representatives from 96 different countries are attending the summit. The IMF has hinted at further support for Kyiv.

The second day of the Munich Security Conference is off and running. Various world leaders are in Bavaria for the weekend event, with NATO's Jens Stoltenberg and the EU's Ursula von der Leyen among the earlier speakers.

"We will stand by Ukraine's side as long as it takes," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tells DW.

Many Chechen groups have formed or moved to Ukraine throughout the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. Several hundred fighters have joined the war, most joining one of several Chechen groups. Some of these groups started operations during the Donbas war in 2014.
