Spain: Gang violence on the rise in poor neighbourhoods of Madrid. Five young people, including two minors, were killed in Madrid in 2022 in score-settling between groups of rival gangs, known locally as "bandas latinas" ("Latino gangs").

In Haiti, gang violence is still rocking the capital Port-au-Prince. We look at two very different initiatives to try to keep it in check: a basketball association working to keep kids off the streets and on the court, and a vigilante movement where civilians are taking justice into their own hands.

Fed up with gang violence, Haitians are hunting down people they suspect of being connected to these infamous armed groups, not hesitating to kill them. The movement – called Bwa Kale – began on April 24 in Port-au-Prince and quickly spread around the country. Dozens of people have been killed by vigilante mobs, often after very brief questioning.

At least five people were killed and several more remain under 10-29 feet deep debris, according to India’s disaster response team. Rescue teams are manually working to dig them out.
