Coronavirus: German international schools on the brink

All 140 German schools abroad are currently closed, with some conducting online lessons. But unless the German government steps in now, many of the them might be forced to shut forever.

Schools reopen in Kenya after a nine-month disruption caused by the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. Hand sanitisation stations are in place and staff check the temperature of students before they are allowed into school. Many parents are happy to see their children back in school as it gives them more freedom to work, though they also have concerns about the potential for the virus to spread among students.

At the Chumchon Muban Phatthana school in Klong Toei, one of Bangkok's poorest neighbourhoods, army personnel wearing PPE suits disinfect schools ahead of their reopening on February 1. Schools have been closed since December after a new outbreak of the virus, with classes conducted online. Schools will remain closed in Samut Sakhon province, where mass testing is underway.

Farmers in Lyon use tractors and banners at a demonstration to rally against news that dinner menus devoid of meat are being proposed by schools in French areas whose councillors were voted in on an ecological ticket. It is the case in Lyon, where the mayor, Grégory Doucet, is from the ecological EELV party. He defends the move by saying: "This is not an operation to promote vegetarianism or veganism since we will offer animal proteins to children every day", like fish and eggs.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has seen an increase in terror attacks, mainly in the north and east of the country. So-called Western education has become the target of jihadist groups. Students and teachers are regularly intimidated, with some even raped or killed. Amid the threat, more than 2,000 schools have closed, preventing more than 300,000 pupils from getting an education, according to the Ministry of Education. On the ground and in IDP camps, NGOs and unions are trying to provide psychological support to traumatised teachers and children. Our correspondents report.
