Safeguarding Western chimpanzees

The disappearance of chimpanzees is accelerating in Guinea Conakry due to poaching, as well as timber and mineral exploitation. To reverse it, one project is raising chimpanzees and preparing them for a return to the wild.

In Guinea, cohabitation between chimpanzees and humans is becoming increasingly tense in some regions of the country. As fields and roads encroach on their territory, the animals are getting more aggressive. In the village of Longory, a four-year-old girl was attacked by a chimpanzee. A zoo in the Swedish town of Furuvik shot dead three chimpanzees after the animals escaped. The situation was still not under control, with the remaining four primates out of their enclosure.
