At least 10,000 people were feared missing in Libya on Tuesday in floods caused by a huge storm that burst dams, swept away buildings and wiped out as much as a quarter of the eastern city of Derna.

Underwater noises heard during the frantic search for the Titan submersible have sparked fresh hope of finding the missing vessel. The sounds were picked up by a Canadian aircraft using buoys with underwater sonar capabilities. Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) were then deployed to further investigate the origin of the "banging" sounds, but have yielded no results so far.
