Guinea junta leader welcomes Niger delegation in Conakry

Niger's coup leader Abdourahamane Tiani sent a delegation, led by his defence chief General Moussa Salaou Barmou, to the Guinean capital Conakry on Saturday to thank leaders there for their support - a sign of the junta's desire to affirm alliances as it stands up to regional and other powers.

Thousands of Guineans took to the streets in Conakry on Tuesday (July 10) to protest a hike in fuel prices that has also pushed up the cost of living. The country has faced repeated strikes in the last year by mine workers as well as teachers and has seen civil unrest over local elections.

Eighty political prisoners detained by Alpha Conde's government, including a number who had campaigned against his third term, were released on Tuesday (september 7) evening following a military coup which deposed the now former Guinean president. Ismael Conde, a former member of Alpha Conde's party who rallied against a third term, left Conakry's central jail thanking the people of Guinea for his liberation and embracing a close relative before disapearing into the crowd.

On a visit to Conakry following the 5 September putsch, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara say they had 'very frank' talks with the putschists' leader, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya. They were also able to meet with former President Alpha Condé, who is still being detained by the coup's plotters.
