It’s October 17, 2025, and today, we join the world to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. This isn’t just a day—it’s a call to our hearts, a reminder of who we are as Nigerians: resilient, communal, unbreakable.

Thirty-eight years ago, in Paris, thousands gathered to honor those fighting poverty’s grip. They carved a truth in stone: poverty is a violation of human rights. That truth echoes here in Nigeria, where millions of our brothers and sisters face daily struggles. For instance, families in Makoko and Ajegunle are unable to afford quality healthcare; farmers in Borno are hit by conflict and terrorism; and children on the streets of many northern states are dreaming of school but are held back by poverty and hunger.

Globally, according to the United Nations, 690 million people live on less than $2.15 a day. In Nigeria, poverty wears a familiar face: the mother selling petty goods in the market, praying for enough to feed her kids; the youth hustling in traffic, chasing a better tomorrow. Yet, their strength inspires us. They’re not just surviving—they’re fighting, teaching us what resilience means.

This year, the world calls for just societies, free from the maltreatment poverty brings. In Nigeria, we know this fight. From the cost-of-living crisis to floods and insecurity, the odds are high. While politicians grow fat on our collective resources, our citizens are getting thinner—hungry, tired, and left behind. There is hope, though. According to the United Nations, since 1990, over a billion people globally have escaped extreme poverty. Nigeria can also change the narrative—but only if our government steps up with real policies for jobs, schools, and healthcare. Backed by our spirit of resilience, we can get this right.

So, Nigeria, what’s our move?

Let’s trend #EndPoverty on social media.

Support local NGOs, such as those that train youth or provide food to families.

Demand our leaders do better—invest in hospitals, schools, and social safety nets, not just their own pockets.

Join events across the nation, from north to south, east to west, and stand with those fighting poverty.

This October 17, let’s make a promise: to build a Nigeria where no one is left behind, where every hustle counts, and every dream has a chance. Together, we can end poverty. Together, we are unstoppable.
