Three weeks ago at dawn, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the start of a "special military operation" in Ukraine. Since then, Ukrainian forces have fought back against the full-scale invasion. Some 3 million people have already fled the country, and the UN estimates that 2 million more are internally displaced. FRANCE 24's Rob Parsons, Clovis Casali and Abdallah Malkawi went to meet Ukrainian soldiers, as well as regular citizens – some trying to flee, others choosing to stay and resist.

Residents in Burkina Faso's capital Ouagadougou on Monday celebrated the detention of President Roch Kabore. Singing and chanting, many walked, some rode motorbikes, to Guillaume Oueadrogo army camp. Kabore has been detained at a military camp by mutinying soldiers, four security sources and a West African diplomat said on Monday.

Animal welfare advocates, conservationists and scientists have carried out a three-year effort to count every cat in the US capital and provide an accurate estimate of the size of Washington's indoor, outdoor and shelter population, as well as the health of the city's cats. As part of the DC Cat Count, researchers set up wildlife cameras in more than 1,500 spots across the city.

Tokyo residents react after Japan's ruling party elected former foreign minister Fumio Kishida its new leader, setting him on course to become the next prime minister of the world's third-largest economy. Kishida, 64, will be confirmed as the new premier in a vote in parliament on October 4 and will then lead the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) into general elections that must happen by November. The 64-year-old won the ruling party's leadership vote, beating popular vaccine chief Taro Kono to finally clinch a job he has long targeted.
