Nigeria expects to produce 23 million metric tonnes of maize this year, a 12% rise from last year, thanks to cheaper credit from the central bank, which has helped blunt the high costs of fertiliser and diesel, the maize growers association said.

Farmers in Nigeria are currently shutting down poultries and other livestock hubs due to the scarcity and high cost of available commercial feed caused by a shortage of maize and soymeal.

On May 17, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, delivered 110 truckloads of food items to the Kano State government to be distributed to the vulnerable and less privileged whose means of survival were affected by the lockdown directive.⁣ ⁣ Two weeks later, the food items have not been distributed and have been left to rot in the open.⁣
