Thomas Kaydor, a political sciences lecturer at the University of Liberia, agreed. “Even if you add up all the votes from the 25 remaining polling stations, George Weah cannot win,” he said. According to Friday's figure, Boakai was 28,000 votes ahead of Weah. Just over 1.6 million ballots have been counted.

Liberia is gearing up for the runoff presidential election. President George Weah is fighting to keep his job, and facing stiff competition from former vice president Joseph Boakai. The election is a rematch of 2017 - when Weah defeated Boakai with 61 percent. But since then, some voters have become disenchanted with Weah - particurarly over issues of corruption and unemployment.

Liberia's presidential election seems to be on track for a run-off after last week's ballot. Provisional results show President George Weah and opposition leader Joseph Boakai neck-and-neck, below the threshold needed to avoid a second round. Also in this edition: parts of Ghana are under water after heavy flooding caused by the overflow of two dams in the Volta region. More than 8,000 people are now displaced.
