Shrouded in toxic smog, New Delhi has shut down schools and workplaces. Though nations pledged to move away from coal at the UN climate summit, India is reluctant to replace the polluting fuel source.
The COP26 climate conference in Glasgow is entering the final hours of what are likely to be tough negotiations. In order to reduce carbon emissions, one key objective is putting an end to coal power. South Africa is among the countries that have pledged to progressively phase out this highly polluting fossil fuel. But on the ground, coal mines are booming. In 2019, scientists working for South Africa’s government completed a study on the health impacts of pollution from the country's sprawling coal industry. So far, it has not seen the light of day. The study, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters, showed more than 5,000 South Africans die annually in the country’s coal belt because the government has failed to enforce its own air quality standards.
Germany's environment minister says South Africa's coal phase-out "has the potential to become a blueprint for other regions." The US and several European countries pledged billions on clean energy development.
In the first half of 2021, coal shot up as the biggest contributor to Germany's electric grid, while wind power dropped to its lowest level since 2018. Officials say the weather is partly to blame.
The deal marks the first time the powerful coal mining sector has agreed to reduce its presence. With this pledge, Poland can meet EU climate goals by 2050.
Africa's energy needs are growing. This has led some governments to turn to coal-powered plants. Critics say that's not a smart move in times of climate change and point to the continent's renewable energy resources.
