The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced it will resume a nationwide strike from Monday, January 12, 2026, after the Federal Government failed to fully implement previously agreed welfare and service demands.

The planned action, tagged TICS 2.0: “No Implementation, No Going Back, will begin at 12 midnight, unless the Ministry of Health and relevant authorities meet key agreements on arrears, allowances, and working conditions.

NARD’s warning comes weeks after it suspended a 29-day nationwide strike that began on November 1, 2025, following a memorandum of understanding with the government.

The suspension was intended to provide a four-week window for implementing its 19-point demands, but leaders say there has been no substantial progress.

This latest move marks one of several industrial actions by NARD in recent months, including a five-day warning strike in September 2025 and the extended indefinite action that disrupted services through much of November and December last year.

Meanwhile, other health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), representing nurses, laboratory staff, allied health professionals, and non-doctor hospital workers, have been on an indefinite nationwide strike since mid-November 2025.

They are demanding the implementation of the adjusted health salary structure and the resolution of long-standing welfare issues, and have maintained their action despite multiple meetings with government negotiators.

The dual industrial actions by both resident doctors and broader health workers have left public hospitals across the country seriously understaffed and essential services disrupted for weeks, deepening the strain on an already fragile health system.
