The recent death of five inmates at the Ikoyi custodial centre has once again drawn attention to the state of Nigeria correctional centres and welfare of inmates. They were electrocuted, after an electric wire snapped and fell on a cell. The cell meant to accommodate 35 inmates, housed about 140 of them at the time of the incident.
