French author Jean-Baptiste Andrea has won this year's Goncourt, France's most prestigious literary award, for his novel "Veiller sur elle" ("Watch Over Her"), a love story set in fascist-era Italy. He spoke to FRANCE 24's Clovis Casali about the political dimension of his work. We also take a look back at the history of the Goncourt, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary.

The American Library in Paris's Programs Manager Emilie Biggs joins Eve Jackson to talk about the book, whose title translates as "Watch Over Her" and the significance of the prize.

Akeem Smith grew up between Brooklyn, New York and Kingston, Jamaica, where his aunt and grandmother were figures of the city's dancehall culture. Over a decade ago he began collecting family photos and videos – archival work that grew into an artistic practice as he sought to bring those archives out of the shadows and into the public view. Smith was the first artist selected for residency at the foundation Lafayette Anticipations in Paris.

She's a cinema pioneer with an incredible list of firsts: Euzhan Palcy was the first female director to win one of France's prestigious César awards, the first Black woman to have a film produced by a major Hollywood studio and the only woman to have directed Marlon Brando. Born on the French island of Martinique, Euzhan Palcy fell in love with cinema but realized Black people were missing from the screen.

But – much like Cinderella – De Bique pursued her dreams to the Manhattan School of Music and is now starring as the fairy tale princess in a fun and feminist production at the Opéra Bastille in Paris.
