Every year, 1.4 billion tons of food waste are discarded worldwide, with the majority ending up in landfill. Food waste accounts for some 6 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Since the beginning of the year, France has made it mandatory for food to be separated from other waste at source. But according to official figures, only one in three French citizens are able to do so.

A chance discovery in a Lithuanian church cellar in 2017 led to the unearthing of a collection of lost stories of Jewish teenagers depicting their lives in the 1930s. Ken Krimstein, a cartoonist for The New Yorker, was so moved by the autobiographical accounts that he travelled to Vilnius to read them in person.

France is home to some 2 million Amazighs, also known as the Berber population. The Amazigh people lived in parts of North Africa prior to the Arab conquest of the region. Whether they be from Morocco or Algeria, Indigenous Amazigh activists have campaigned for decades for greater recognition of their language, culture and traditions. In France, many of them are on a quest to better discover their own identity.
