Legal proceedings are officially underway at the Ogun State Multi-Door Courthouse following the tragic road accident involving world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua. The driver appeared for his first court hearing today Friday, January 2nd, 2026, facing serious charges of manslaughter and reckless driving. The charges stem from the fatal accident that occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s close associates, personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and his strength coach, Sina Ghami
According to Guardian correspondent David Meshionye, who reported live from the courthouse, the atmosphere remains tense. Meshionye notes that while the driver’s family has been reluctant to speak officially to the press, they have shared crucial details behind the scenes.
The defense’s core argument centers on a mechanical failure; the driver claims the vehicle’s brakes failed as he approached a stationary truck. Despite his reported efforts to bring the car to a halt, he ultimately rammed into the parked vehicle. Following the hearing, the case has been adjourned until January 28th, and the driver was initially moved to the Sagamu Correctional Center while his legal team finalized documentation.
In the latest update from the courthouse, the presiding magistrate has granted the driver bail. The conditions are significant, reflecting the gravity of the charges:
Bail Sum: ₦5 million.
Sureties: The driver is required to provide four sureties to secure his release pending the next court date.
As the legal process continues, all eyes remain on Ogun state to see how the court weighs the claims of brake failure against the charges of reckless driving.
