Even before the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Iron Curtain had become porous. Thousands of people left the former East Germany for the West. After reunification, the exodus - especially of young women - continued. Like many other places, the small town Penkun was threatened with extinction, but, 30 years later, that has changed.
