Worried about reports of rising domestic violence during lockdown, Polish teen Krysia Paszko came up with a website which on the surface looks like a cosmetics shop, but actually is a virtual helpline offering victims covert help. With families cooped up together under stress, one abuse hotline saw a 50% hike in calls during Poland’s first lockdown. But despite helping hundreds of people and winning 10,000-euro ($12,000) EU award for the page, Paszko says there is a long way to go to safeguard victims.

A campaign group for bereaved families draws almost 150,000 hearts on a wall opposite Britain’s Houses of Parliament as a memorial to victims of the Covid-19 pandemic. The group Covid-19 Bereaved Families For Justice UK, which organised the event, has called for a public inquiry into the government’s handling of the pandemic. Labour leader Keir Starmer also came to see the hearts and said it was a "close reminder to all of us that we must express our voices on behalf of those who have lost someone.".
