The World Meteorological Organisation's head of applied climate services Bob Stefanski says the organisation is seeking to verify a temperature record in Sicily of 48.8 degrees Celsius and that temperature records for continental Europe may exceed 50 degrees Celsius in the future.
The US National Weather Service has said the heat wave "will likely be one of the most extreme in recorded history" for parts of the region, as people are warned to take precautions against "life threatening" heat.
