The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission says it aims to close the existing five million metering gap, within the next three years. This comes as the regulator has already begun implementation of the meter roll-out plan by the distribution companies under the Meter Asset Provider scheme. In its first-quarter report, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission says only about 42 per cent of registered electricity customers have been metered, while financial illiquidity remains the most significant challenge affecting the industry's sustainability.

Nigeria's National Bureau of Statistics says the total number of power consumers with prepaid meters rose by 1.59 percent in the second quarter. Earlier this year, the Meter Asset Provider Regulation was introduced by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to help close the metering gap.
