One protester was killed as security forces confronted thousands of people protesting against military rule in Sudan's capital Khartoum on Sunday (January 30), medics linked to the demonstrations said. The 27-year-old, Mohamed Yousef Ismail, was hit in the chest, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) said.

Security forces shot dead at least 15 people and wounded dozens as thousands of Sudanese took to the streets on Wednesday on the deadliest day in a month of demonstrations against military rule, medics said. The protesters, marching against an October 25 coup across the capital Khartoum and in the cities of Bahri and Omdurman, demanded a full handover to civilian authorities and for the leaders of the October 25 coup to be put on trial. Security forces fired live rounds and tear gas to prevent gatherings in all three cities, and mobile phone communications were cut, witnesses said. State television said there were injuries among protesters and police.

Around 1,500 medical workers and Covid-19 patients, many in full PPE, join for a mass performance of the angklung, a traditional Indonesian instrument made of bamboo. The act marks the opening of the country’s largest Covid-19 hospital which has treated more than 70,000 patients.

Portugal appealed for help after a severe rise in COVID cases overwhelmed its hospitals. Germany is one of three countries sending assistance.
