Didier Drogba submitted his candidacy before the deadline for next month's Ivory Coast Football Federation elections on Saturday. The 42-year-old former African Footballer of the Year is one of four candidates seeking the presidency of the West African country's football association. But he is still not certain to be on the ballot for the Sept. 5 vote.

Days after the sudden death of Ivory Coast's prime minister and ruling party candidate in upcoming elections, the country's vice president resigns. The move adds further uncertainty to the political landscape. Also, Rwanda is the only country in sub-Saharan Africa whose nationals can now travel to Europe's Schengen area. Despite the apparent success of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic, cases are on the rise. And we examine the longstanding political and ethnic tensions in Ethiopia that fed into unrest that followed the killing of Oromo singer Hacaaluu Hundeesaa at the end of June.

Ivory Coast mourns the premier who had been due to run in upcoming presidential elections. Amadou Gon Coulibaly's shock death on Wednesday has left the ruling party willing to consider incumbent President Alassane Ouattara running again as its candidate. Also, several people are killed in DR Congo as clashes break out between police and protesters objecting to the new chief of the country's electoral commission. And in Kenya, school closures due to the coronavirus have left the most vulnerable even more so. Authorities are worried about a surge in post-lockdown teenage pregnancies.

Covid-19 continues to hit South Africa worse than any other country on the continent, with more than 111,000 coronavirus cases and 2,000 deaths. Hospitals remain understaffed and medical workers are among the worst affected. Our correspondents spoke to nurses protesting for more equipment. Meanwhile, Sudan has also been battling the virus and pharmacies are reporting shortages of basic medication. Finally, the French navy has been working with naval services in West Africa to clamp down on drug trafficking and piracy. Our correspondents gained access to one ship in Ivory Coast.

With the number of African footballers playing for teams around the world at an all-time high, thousands of youngsters dream of following in their footsteps. According to the NGO Foot Solidaire, over 6,000 minors leave Africa every year in the hopes of being recruited abroad. Some hand over their savings to unscrupulous middlemen for the dubious promise of a trial with a foreign club. Today, both amateur and professional players are trying to prevent aspiring African footballers from falling victim to people smugglers. Our Ivory Coast correspondent Thaïs Brouck reports.
