In Thailand, cohabitation between humans and wild elephants is increasingly difficult, as the animals seek to expand their habitat. At least 20 people were killed by elephants last year. Meanwhile, out of fear or revenge for the damage to their crops, a dozen elephants are killed by humans in the country each year. But one NGO is trying to put an end to these incidents. Our France 2 colleagues report, with FRANCE 24's James Vasina.

Sri Lanka's main elephant orphanage recorded a rare twin birth Tuesday as a 25-year-old named Surangi delivered healthy male calves, the first elephant twins born in captivity in the country for 80 years. Official records show there are about 200 domesticated elephants in the island country and an estimated 7,500 in the wild.

A pregnant elephant was killed in India after eating fruit stuffed with explosives, officials said Wednesday, sparking outrage over the use of such traps to protect crops and homes. The wild elephant strayed into a village near Silent Valley National Park in south Kerala state last Wednesday when it ate the rigged fruit -- believed to be a pineapple -- which exploded and severely injured its mouth, officials said.
