As the first few hundred French and European nationals are evacuated from coup-hit Niger, the military governments of Mali and Burkina Faso say any foreign armed intervention in Niamey will be treated as a declaration of war against them all. Also, two protesters are killed in demonstrations that erupted in Senegal after opposition figure Ousmane Sonko was jailed on Monday.

Germany is suspending its bilateral cooperation with Niger until further notice and has warned that it might take further steps in response to a military coup last week that saw democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum detained by a group of soldiers.

Kenyan President William Ruto, on Friday, condemned the coup in Niger that saw Mohamed Bazoum deposed from power by members of his presidential guard. Niger's coup is the seventh in West and Central Africa since 2020. Niger is a key Western ally in a global fight against insurgencies in the Sahel region.
