Liverpool marched into the knockout stages of the Champions League with two games to spare after a convincing 2-0 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday (November 3) guaranteed them top spot in Group B. With four wins out of four, Juergen Klopp's side can now take their foot off the gas for the final two games of the group stage and focus their resources on their Premier League title push. Liverpool have yet to lose in 16 matches in all competitions this season and their unbeaten run stretches back 25 matches to their April 6 loss to Real Madrid in last season's Champions League campaign.

Liverpool’s former captain and talisman Steven Gerrard has been appointed the new manager of Aston Villa. The position became vacant when Villa sacked Dean Smith on Sunday after a run of five successive Premier League defeats. Gerrard has enjoyed a hugely successful period at Rangers where he managed to break Celtic’s nine year hold on the Scottish Premiership title.

A taxi driver was described as having an 'incredible presence of mind' by Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday (November 15) following his reported actions prior to a blast outside the Liverpool Women's Hospital on the previous day. An explosive device blew up a taxi at the hospital on Sunday after it was carried on board by a passenger, who was killed by the explosion, police said.
