Rashford missed a penalty along with teammates Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka in the 3-2 shoutout. Rashford responded in a lengthy statement on social media in which he apologised for his penalty miss in the shoot out. The forward wrote: "All I can say is sorry. I wish it had of gone differently." He also said messages of support daubed on a defaced mural of his face left him "on the verge of tears".

A mural commissioned by London's City Hall celebrates England's football team, who reached the finals of the Euro 2020 championship, showing Gareth Southgate, Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling next to the slogan 'You did us proud'. One of the artists who created the piece, street artist 'Mr Meana' of the MurWalls collective, says the work highlights 'the importance of getting racism out of football' in the wake of racist comments about the team online.

Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante will not be involved in the club's Champions League opener against Zenit St Petersburg, manager Thomas Tuchel said on Monday (September 12) ahead of their Group H clash against the Russian side. Kante has been struggling with an ankle injury this season, and was substituted at halftime against Liverpool before the international break when the problem flared up again and he subsequently missed France's World Cup qualifiers. Tuchel was hopeful Kante would be back in action against Zenit but now expects the 30-year-old to return for Sunday's Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur.

England chalked up their biggest ever competitive victory with a 20-0 humiliation of Latvia in a Women's World Cup qualifier as Ellen White broke the Lionesses's scoring record on a busy night for the scorekeeper at the Keepmoat Stadium on Tuesday. White bagged a hat-trick to take her tally to 48 from 101 caps for England, beating Kelly Smith's mark by two goals. Ten different players found the back of the net in a one-way encounter with 21-year-old Lauren Hemp striking four times for her first goals with England.
