World leaders ‘squabbling like children’ as 660,000 people displaced

The UN Security Council has officially welcomed a Russian-Turkish brokered ceasefire in Syria. It's hoped it will help pave the way for peace talks which are due to be held in Kazakhstan in January.

Israel has sent extra troops to the occupied West Bank after at least seven Israelis and Palestinians were killed, the biggest surge in bloodshed between the two sides in years.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas says the Council must include more permanent members to reflect today's world order. He also said Germany will not "shun its responsibility" for global conflict resolution.

Russia blocked a US resolution on Venezuela in the UN, claiming the document was "written for regime change." In a video column for DW, Uruguay's former-President Jose Mujica urged the EU to push for talks in Venezuela.

Germany is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. From the beginning of April, it officially takes over the chair — as part of a "dual presidency" with France.

The UN Security Council has called for a halt to military movements in Tripoli following an offensive by eastern forces on the capital.

Pakistan has requested that the UN Security Council meet over India abolishing Kashmir's special autonomous status. Tensions have escalated in the region, which has been disputed for more than 70 years.

Although the Security Council told India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute bilaterally, it didn't call a formal meeting or issue a statement. Some analysts dubbed the response "lukewarm."

Nigeria moves to domesticate UN Security Council resolution

The United Nations has expressed concern about possible violations of international law and an increasingly dire refugee situation. The Ethiopian government has said the conflict is reaching its decisive stage.

The UN Security Council voices "deep concern" over the military coup in Myanmar, and calls in a draft statement for the "release of all detainees" including Aung San Suu Kyi. "The members of the Security Council emphasized the need for the continued support of the democratic transition in Myanmar," Britain's ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, tells reporters.
