Somalia: Blast, gunfire near mayor’s office kills several

An explosion near a government building in Mogadishu was followed by a shootout between security forces and gunmen that left at least five civilians dead. The al-Shabab terror group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The explosion at a cafe in Russia's second-largest city also injured more than a dozen other people. The blast reportedly took place during an event organized by a patriotic Russian group.
Police have detained a suspect in connection with the blast that killed a leading war blogger in a cafe on Sunday.

A suicide bomber has killed between 20 and 30 soldiers and injured nearly 60 more in an attack on a military academy in Mogadishu. Al-Qaeda-affiliate al-Shabab has been trying to topple Somalia's government since 2007.
