Peru’s climate refugees feel ‘abandoned’ by the state

Vice President Dina Boluarte has been sworn in as the country's first female president, and Pedro Castillo was arrested. Castillo had tried to dissolve Congress in a bid to avoid impeachment.

After less than a week in office, Dina Boluarte said she would ask Congress to move up elections by two years. Former President Pedro Castillo, who was voted out by lawmakers, decried the move as a "dirty game."

Peru has plunged into a deep political crisis since the removal of its former President Pedro Castillo. Mexico says the removal should be disregarded.

Authorities allege that the generals had paid to rise in rank under the previous government of Pedro Castillo. Castillo himself remains in custody after being charged with rebellion.

Dozens of people died in violent clashes that have rocked Peru since early December. Prosecutors announced they were launching an investigation following the deadliest day of protests.

President Dina Boluarte also apologized for ongoing political unrest that has left dozens of people dead, as Peru's attorney general announced a probe into the deaths.
