Peru: Arrest warrant issued for ex-president

Ousted Peruvian President Pedro Castillo faced his first hearing on charges of rebellion and conspiracy. Meanwhile, newly sworn-in President Dina Boluarte appeared to open the possibility for fresh elections.

Boluarte has appeared on national television at a military ceremony as she attempts to secure her grip on power. Boluarte replaced ousted leftist leader Pedro Castillo whose supporters are protests for his return.

Two teenagers were killed in clashes with police in the southern city of Andahuaylas. Demonstrations also occurred in the capital and other regions following the controversial ouster of former President Pedro Castillo.

After less than a week in office, Dina Boluarte said she would ask Congress to move up elections by two years. Former President Pedro Castillo, who was voted out by lawmakers, decried the move as a "dirty game."

Peru has plunged into a deep political crisis since the removal of its former President Pedro Castillo. Mexico says the removal should be disregarded.

Peru's recently appointed President Dina Boluarte says she will not step down amid violence over the toppling of her predecessor. However, she called on lawmakers to resolve the impasse by bringing forward elections.

Caught up in the unrest that gripped Peru following the ouster of President Pedro Castillo, tourists visiting the Machu Picchu ruins have finally been able to leave the area. Stranded for days, they were relieved when rail links were partially restored. But it was not an easy trip.

Authorities allege that the generals had paid to rise in rank under the previous government of Pedro Castillo. Castillo himself remains in custody after being charged with rebellion.

Dozens of people died in violent clashes that have rocked Peru since early December. Prosecutors announced they were launching an investigation following the deadliest day of protests.

President Dina Boluarte also apologized for ongoing political unrest that has left dozens of people dead, as Peru's attorney general announced a probe into the deaths.
