Milan is a center for design. So it's fitting for architect Giovanna Cornelio to live in a breathtakingly beautiful luxury apartment. What's surprising is that it's in a 1950s eyesore whose interior she's redesigned.

Milan wakes up to a thick 15 centimetre layer of snow covering the city. The main roads have been cleared by municipal vehicles but many secondary roads remain covered and the main trams heading towards the city centre have stopped. In the Villapizzone district, west of the city, the snow is causing traffic problems.

The trip, completed across two days aboard the so called 'Blue Train', is renowned for its opulence and 5-star service. Previously, it was primarily accessible to overseas tourists. But now, after significantly lowering the prices, more South Africans have been taking the trip, after international tourism declined due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Milan is the centre of Italy's industrial north and one of the richest cities in Europe. But as the pandemic has battered the country, poverty rates have soared, even here. Since coronavirus swept across Italy a year ago, the line for food parcels outside Milan's Pane Quotidiano charity has grown and grown. Every day, 3,500 people turn up at the two distribution points run in Milan by the charity, which hands out surplus food it receives from a range of organisations, as well as through individual donations.
