Continued mass strikes and protest action have forced King Charles to postpone his planned visit to France on Sunday. It would have been his first official trip as king.

King Charles III is so far enjoying a "remarkable upsurge in public support" after his mother’s death, but it remains to be seen whether this will last. That's the view of Sean Lang, a senior lecturer in history at Anglia Ruskin University, who specialises in the history of the British Empire. He added that there may be a "snowball effect" if one or more countries decide to remove the British monarch as head of state, but that the Commonwealth itself has a bright future ahead.

Queen Elizabeth II passed away last week after reigning for 70 years over a Commonwealth of Nations that included Barbados until November 2021, when the country became a republic. In an interview with FRANCE 24, Prime Minister Mia Mottley said the queen "did extraordinary well as the head of the United Kingdom and, indeed, as head of the Commonwealth".
