Israel: Gaza violence continues into second day with airstrikes, rockets

Police in Germany disbanded pro-Palestinian rallies as Middle East tensions intensify. Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that the country "will not suffer" antisemitic protests.

Inside a Gaza hospital, Mohammad al-Hadidi cradled his baby boy Omar -- his only surviving child after Israeli air strikes killed his wife and four other sons in the night. After the strikes, rescue workers pulled the five-month-old from the arms of his dead mother early Saturday, one of his tiny legs fractured in three places.

Israel and Gaza have so far been keeping to an agreed cease-fire. The US is keen to shore up that arrangement with the visit of its secretary of state.

Israel said it would not cooperate with a UN probe into possible war crimes committed during the conflict.

Sunday's visit was the first by an Israeli foreign minister to Egypt for over a decade. Top of the agenda was the fragile cease-fire as well as plans to rebuild the bombed Palestinian enclave.

In Gaza, a week since the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel was announced, many residents come out to enjoy the beaches. The truce ended 11 days of devastating Israeli bombardment of Gaza, killing 248 Palestianians, and rockets and other fire into Israel from the coastal strip that killed 12.

Delegations from Israel and Egypt meet in Cairo and Jerusalem to discuss establishing a permanent ceasefire between the Jewish state and Gaza's Hamas rulers. Egypt played a pivotal role in negotiating a ceasefire earlier this month between Israel and Gaza's Palestinian Islamist rulers Hamas, bringing an end to 11 days of deadly fighting.

Hamas militants launched incendiary balloons into Israel for a third straight day, prompting the Israeli response. A cease-fire after last month's 11-day conflict now appears in tatters.

The violence is one of the worst since the 11-day Israel-Hamas conflict in May. A 13-year-old Palestinian boy and an Israeli Border Police solider were among those critically injured.

Two cars are seen destroyed in Kabul after the United States said it carried out an air strike on Sunday night in Kabul on an IS-prepared car bomb. The US military said it was "aware of reports of civilian casualties" from the strike, which came after an attack outside the airport late last week killed more than 100 people, including 13 American troops.

The United States is investigating whether civilians may have been killed in an air strike it launched to destroy a car laden with explosives in the Afghan capital Kabul. Witnesses and some media reports say a number of children were among those killed in Sunday's air strike in the crowded capital, where thousands of Afghans are still trying to flee the Taliban. The vehicle was reportedly a threat to Kabul airport and was linked to the regional Islamic State chapter.

Israel said it is expanding Gaza's fishing zone, increasing its water supply and allowing more Palestinian traders and goods to access Israel.
