Hitler’s pre-war speeches fetch thousands at contentious auction

Handwritten notes for speeches given by Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler have been sold at auction in Munich. Jewish groups had expressed concerns that they might serve as encouragement to neo-Nazis.

Sotheby's is auctioning "the ultimate NFT": the source code with which Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Due to the historical and unprecedented "relevance and cultural impact" of the item on sale, the auction house recognized it was impossible to put an estimate on it. The bid is already higher than than $2 million dollars, with days to go before the sale.

A fascinating new book links art, the mentally ill and Adolf Hitler. It tells the story of how modern art was originally inspired by the work of psychiatric patients and how Hitler – twice rejected from art school – turned first on modern artists and later on those who had inspired them. The Nazis murdered thousands of psychiatric patients, in a chilling forerunner of the Holocaust. The book is entitled "The Gallery of Miracles and Madness: Insanity, Modernism, and Hitler's War on Art". Its author Charlie English joined us on Perspective to tell us more.

Dresses, purses, and heart-shaped glasses, among other objects belonging to the cherished British singer Amy Winehouse, are displayed at New York City’s Hard Rock Cafe, as seen on Monday, before going under the hammer at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills. Over 800 personal effects of the Grammy-winning diva will be auctioned, including the dress she wore during her last performance in Belgrade before her death in 2011. The family of former South African President Nelson Mandela is putting roughly 100 of his belongings up for auction to help fund a memorial garden in his honor, including some of his iconic shirts. It's the trademark clothing of an iconic leader and now Nelson Mandela's exuberant shirts are among around 100 of his possessions being put up for auction.

An Israeli court suspended on Wednesday the auction of a partial tattoo kit billed as having been used on inmates at the Auschwitz death camp, following outcry from Holocaust survivors. Obtained from a private collector, the eight fingernail-sized steel dies, each lined with pins to form numerals, would have been pressed into prisoners' flesh with ink to brand their serial numbers, according to auctioneer Meir Tzolman. His website had deemed it "the most shocking of Holocaust items", with a projected sale value of $30,000 to $40,000.
