Historic sailboat sinks after container boat collision near Hamburg

A 136-year-old wooden schooner had only just emerged from a €1.5-million renovation when it was sunk by a container ship near Hamburg. The accident would likely have been fatal if rescuers hadn't been in the area.

Dramatic footage shows a crew member of a Dutch cargo ship throwing himself into the sea after the ship began listing heavily and was too dangerous to stay aboard. Norwegian emergency services rescued the 12 crew members of the "Eemslift Hendrika", with some being airlifted to safety and others having to jump into the water. The vessel which was carrying several mid-sized boats between Bremerhaven in Germany and the port of Kolvereid ran into difficulty in the Norwegian Sea and there are now fears that it could capsize.
