Isaias Afwerki once was hailed as the Eritrea's independence hero. But over the past three decades, his policies have pushed the country into isolation, leading to two-thirds of the country living below the poverty line.

The Ethiopian government has been accused of "ethnic cleansing" in its military offensive against rebels in Tigray. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has previously said Eritrean troops would leave the region.
