From liberator to oppressor: 30 years of Eritrea under Isaias Afwerki

Isaias Afwerki once was hailed as the Eritrea's independence hero. But over the past three decades, his policies have pushed the country into isolation, leading to two-thirds of the country living below the poverty line.

Ethiopia's federal government announces it's taken a key town in Tigray as it continues its advance on the rebel region's capital. Meanwhile over 25,000 have reached Sudan after fleeing the violence. The Ethiopian government has been accused of "ethnic cleansing" in its military offensive against rebels in Tigray. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has previously said Eritrean troops would leave the region.

Fighters in the northern Ethiopian region say forces from both countries have begun a "massive" attack on their positions. Fighting in the nearly two-year conflict resumed last week after a monthslong lull.
