French priest and Holocaust researcher gathers accounts of atrocities in Ukraine

A Roman Catholic priest has begun documenting the stories of those whose lives have been devastated by the war in Ukraine. Father Patrick Desbois is a former head of the Church's Commission for Relations with Judaism and spent years documenting the murder of 1.5 million Jews by the Nazis in Ukraine. He has now turned his attention to the present day, gathering eyewitness accounts from victims of what he says are war crimes and crimes against humanity by Russian troops. He joined us for Perspective.

The conflict has cut off supplies from Ukraine's ports, which once exported vast amounts of cooking oil as well as cereals such as maize and wheat. This has reduced the global supply and caused the price of alternatives to soar. Global food prices are almost 30% higher than the same time last year, according to the UN.

Although fierce fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, people in the Kyiv region are already starting to rebuild, two and a half months after the withdrawal of Russian troops. The Ukrainian government estimates the cost of damage at more than $100 billion nationwide.
