First female Afghan governor calls US withdrawal ‘a big mistake’

Dr. Habiba Sarabi is one of four women who took part in the negotiations with the Taliban in Doha at the end of 2020. She is also the first woman to have ruled an Afghan province, that of Bamiyan. Sarabi, who was in Doha when the Taliban took power, spoke to us from the Turkish city of Izmir, where she now lives. She called the withdrawal of US and NATO troops from Afghanistan "a big mistake", branding the US pullout "irresponsible".

The fact that you could not get your country under control after 20 years is irresponsible. The fact that the United States allowed this to continue for 20 years is irresponsible. No attempt was made to insure you had a government that was competent, responsible and honest. We watched and gave protection to those thieves for 20 years. This fool negotiated with the Taliban, did she expect a different result. The only person who made out on this whole thing was the spineless coward this country had a as president Ashraf Ghani. If anyone is brought back for trial in Afghanistan it should be him. We should have recognized this 10 years ago, we would have saved a lot of lives and money. The only thing we should have done, is say we are leaving in exactly six month and anyone that wants to get out especially women needs to plan now.
We will review and take appropriate action.
