Dam on the verge of collapse in hurricane hit Puerto Rico

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake shook Puerto Rico on Monday, toppling houses and causing power outages and small landslides, but there were no reports of casualties.

The US Geological Survey said the recent earthquake was an aftershock of a 6.4-magnitude tremor that struck Puerto Rico in January. While several buildings were damaged, no injuries were reported.

Ethiopia has denied reports that it started filling its massive hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile, after satellite images showed higher water levels. The dam has sparked tensions with downriver nations Egypt and Sudan.

US President Donald Trump predicted that Egypt would "blow up" a mega-dam that Ethiopia is building on the Nile. Neighboring countries have criticized plans for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

The three countries are seeking to resolve a row over the huge dam on the Blue Nile. The controversial structure has been almost a decade in the making but there is optimism a deal could be reached by the end of January.

A large quantity of waste, estimated at between 4,000 and 5,000 cubic metres, invades the dam of a hydroelectric power station on the Drina river in eastern Bosnia. One of Bosnia's five major rivers, the Drina is regularly polluted by the illegal dumps that arise along its banks. This waste is normally stopped by anti-pollution dams, which are located upstream of the power plants, and then collected. But during high water, these dams break under a large quantity of garbage that then invades the area in front of the dam of the power station.

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan will meet this weekend to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which broke ground in 2011. The three Nile Basin countries are in a longstanding dispute over the project.
