Children race in Delhi despite polluted air

Children as young as nine years old run in smoggy Delhi, as part of an event, organised by a non-profit, ignoring health warnings issued after pollution reached dangerous levels forcing the government to shut schools for two days.

Since hanging up his gloves, former Nigerien heavyweight boxing champion Abdoul Aziz Ousseini has turned to combating the issue of the neglected so-called 'street children' in the capital Niamey. Every weekend, Aziz dedicates his time to helping these young people, teaching them the skills of the sport and giving them a new occupation. As crowds of mothers and sick and malnourished children fill the waiting rooms of the Indira Gandhi Children's Hospital, medical staff are squeezing three babies into a single incubator and doubling up in infant warmer beds. Nurses who once took care of three or four babies each, are now having to look after 20 or more to make up for the absence of staff who fled the country when the Taliban seized power in August.

At least 25 primary school children were killed when their thatched-roof classrooms caught fire in southern Niger on Monday the council of ministers said in a statement. Fourteen more children were injured, including five in a critical condition, the statement said. The school is in the town of Maradi, more than 600 km (370 miles) east of the capital Niamey. Classes have been suspended and three days of mourning declared in Maradi.

More than half of families in Lebanon had at least one child who skipped a meal by October 2021 amid a "dramatic deterioration of living conditions", the UN's children's fund UNICEF said in a report released on Tuesday (November 23). Children have been hit hard by the country's deep economic crisis exacerbated by the global coronavirus pandemic which has left about eight in 10 people poor and threatens the education of some 700,000 children including 260,000 Lebanese, the report said.
