A volcano begins spewing out ash again after a brief lull in the Canary Islands, where coastal residents are confined to their homes over fears of toxic gases when the lava hits the sea. La Cumbre Vieja, which straddles a southern ridge in La Palma in the Atlantic archipelago, erupted on September 19, spewing out rivers of lava which have slowly crept towards the sea.

When La Cumbre Vieja began erupting and sending burning lava across huge swathes of land on the western side of La Palma in Spain's Canary Islands, thousands of people were forced to flee. Pensioners Margaretha and Luis were among those who had to leave their homes, and the couple are now taking refuge in their small boat in the port of Tazacorte until it is safe to return.
