"Missed opportunities in transportation can reinforce racial and economic inequality," says Pete Buttigieg, US President Joe Biden's nominee for Secretary of Transportation, in the opening statement at his Senate confirmation hearing. If confirmed, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and Democratic presidential candidate would be the first openly gay Cabinet member.
