Armenia Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s party wins majority in snap polls

Russia is monitoring a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but tensions over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region have risen this week.

EU leaders brokered the agreement that will see a joint border commission established. The two countries' leaders met for the third time in six months as tensions continue to flare in the region.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed unblocking the border at the meeting with the EU's Charles Michel in Brussels.

An explosion at a market in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, has killed at least one person and injured many more. The initial blast sparked a fire.

Armenian and Azerbaijani soldiers exchanged artillery fire near Nagorno-Karabakh, prompting fears of escalation similar to the 2020 war. Both sides blamed each other for the initial provocations.

A tentative truce appears to be holding, but Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's office said the situation was still "very tense." Over 200 soliders died in fighting this week.

Clashes erupt between Azerbaijan and Armenia

Armenia has accused Azerbaijan of trying to advance into its territory, after deadly fighting between the countries broke out overnight.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken hosted the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan, who met for the first time since border clashes earlier this month killed over 170 soldiers. A ceasefire was agreed last week.

Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said 49 of its soldiers died in overnight clashes, while Azerbaijan's defence ministry said 50 of its servicemen were also killed. The neighbouring countries have fought two wars and seen regular smaller clashes span three decades.

The Azeri president accused his French counterpart of siding with Armenia over the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Macron was due to mediate new EU-brokered talks in Brussels next month.
