Britain’s fishing industry suffered from the UK being late to join the European Community in the 1970s, and fishermen have blamed the EU ever since for quotas that give foreign boats generous access to British waters. They hope Brexit will change that, but with negotiations about to begin after the UK’s official leaving date of January 31st, there’s no guarantee that their situation will improve.

One of the most emotive issues for the UK is fishing, with many in the industry strongly supporting the 2016 vote to leave to EU due to what they see as an unfair quota system.
