The International Air Transport Association predicts half of all airlines will be bankrupt by June if governments don't step in with loans and bailouts. Climate campaigners, however, believe the pause in aviation due to Covid-19 is an opportunity to build a cleaner air transport system.

The International Airline Transport Association has warned that preparations need to start for shipping a Covid-19 vaccine globally, once one is approved. The group, which represents 290 airlines worldwide, says that thousands of planes will be needed for the operation, which it describes as the "largest transport challenge ever" for the air cargo industry. Also today, as French supermarket chain Auchan announces more than 1,400 job cuts, we look at whether the pandemic helped bring about the end of the hypermarket.

Some 32,000 workers at two of America's biggest airlines are being temporarily laid off, or furloughed, after a government support programme for the sector ran out. American Airlines and United say they will rehire workers if more aid is agreed by lawmakers, but passengers remain significantly lower than before the pandemic struck. Republicans and Democrats in Washington are still discussing a new stimulus plan, which would include money for the aviation industry. Also, Tokyo's stock exchange is shut down for a whole day after a technical problem at the world's third-largest bourse.

US lawmakers are still discussing a possible stimulus plan, after Donald Trump called off bipartisan negotiations and then backtracked on his decision. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, has added to the confusion by rejecting a "standalone" aid package for the airline industry. The labour market meanwhile shows more signs of stalling, as unemployment claims remain high. Also in the show: the French government expands its support for small businesses, and Google loses a court case over paying for news content.
