40 Communities submerged after heavy downpour in Adamawa

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Pakistan to draw global attention to the devastating floods that have inundated nearly one-third of the South Asian nation.

Africa's rivers are lifelines. But extreme weather often poses a threat to those who live on their banks. Early-warning weather systems are in need of improvement, experts say.

Nigeria is battling one of the worst floods the West African nation has seen in over a decade. In 2022 alone, over 300 people have been killed, including at least 20 from last week.

Residents of Kogi – the state most affected by the recent deluge in parts of Nigeria – urgently need help and are calling on the state and federal governments, as well as well-meaning individuals and organisations, to come to their aid.

Pakistan is dealing with its worst climate disaster on record. UN figures estimate some 1,700 people have lost their lives. Millions remain displaced. In the Sindh province, most villages are either still underwater, or surrounded by stagnant, dirty water leading to a spike in waterborne diseases.

Nearly two months after flooding destroyed vast swaths of rural Pakistan, communities hoping to rebuild are still waiting for much-needed financial aid from the government.

Nigeria is suffering its worst flooding in a decade largely because of heavy rain and climate change. Properties worth millions have been lost with hundreds injured. Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, NECA, has raised the alarm over the recent flood ravaging many parts of the country, saying it had worsened the socio-economic woes of Nigerians.⁣ ⁣

At a UN conference, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called upon countries to assist Pakistan with its recovery efforts following deadly floods last year. Pakistan says it needs $8 billion from other countries.

Europe is facing its worst drought in at least 500 years, with two-thirds of the continent in a state of alert or warning, reducing inland shipping, electricity production and the yields of certain crops, a European Union agency said on Tuesday.

Floods hit villages of the eastern Kalehe territory earlier this week, causing rivers to overflow. Villages were submerged, with landslides causing destruction.
